I don’t know about you, but I have to have a goal. I’ve always got to be working toward something or I get depressed. There always has to be a purpose for what I’m doing and an end game in mind.
You can read these minimalist guys talking about living with no goals and the ability to create a better life when you aren’t consumed with achievement. A “purpose-free” life they call it. They claim to let everything go and just be.
“Be what?,” I want to ask. A slug? A lazy bum? A wandering hobo?
“Be where?,” Living with your mother? In the food stamp line?
I think that train of thought is the biggest load of crap I’ve ever heard. A man has to create to be a man. Whether you are building a house, writing a book, or shoveling this minimalist horse manure, you’ve got to be creating something where there was nothing before.
In order to feel like you’ve accomplished something in life you’ve got to leave some proof. You have to make your mark. You’ve got to be able to point to something tangible that wouldn’t be there if you hadn’t created it.
I’ll be honest with you, if I let myself I would sit down in my La-Z-Boy recliner, crack open a beer and play Grand Theft Auto from now on. But I would get depressed and feel worthless
BECAUSE…..I didn’t have any goals for myself.
BECAUSE…..I wasn’t accomplishing something.
BECAUSE…..I would smell the stink of failure and know that I was a lazy bum.
Have a Purpose
If we don’t have a purpose, a wish, or a destination and if we aren’t actively working towards accomplishing something…anything, what good are we? You’ve got to be moving forward, moving towards something or else you are losing at the game of life.
Are you a loser? Are you wasting your life away?
I can only think of two reasons why someone would have no goals in life. How could someone live with no purposes, no initiative to get out of bed in the morning and start winning the day.
Either you have already accomplished every single thing within your mental and physical capabilities…OR you have quit on life.
Now, I’m pretty damn sure no one has ever accomplished everything there is to accomplish. So that only leaves the alternative.
I had a football coach in high school and his favorite saying was you are “folding tent.” When the running got to be to much or someone was lagging behind in pushing the sled. He would yell, “You are quitting. Your folding tent and quitting.”
Well folks, a man without a mission has done folded tent and quit. If we aren’t motivated by some higher ideal and working everyday to achieve it we are folding tent.
If you aren’t internally driven to accomplish or succeed at a specific goal in life you have already quit. You must rule your reality!
Create Something out of Nothing
So get off your ass today and start building something. Quit surfing craigslist or drop the game controller or turn off the internet porn…whatever mind-sucking activity that you are distracting yourself with and get out and do something.
It doesn’t matter what or how. Because if you haven’t already reached the level of success you desire, this is a simple exercise of habit forming. You’ve got to learn and form the habits of success before you expect to attain it. In this first step, the simple act of forming a thought and acting on it is, itself, your first victory.
Here is a list of action steps to follow next:
- Make a list of what you want to achieve. Remember, nothing is impossible for an ass- kicker.
- Pick the one item on the list that is most important to you. Don’t spend to much time worrying because YOU WILL get to them all…at this point it is only a matter of what is first.
- Think about your chosen. There will be innumerable paths you can take to make it happen. At this point, decide on the method or methods you will utilize and create an outline of how you will make it happen.
- Visualize it happening. I know it sounds asinine. But fellas it works. If you can see it happening your belief levels will rise and you will develop the patience needed to persevere. Don’t procrastinate or get discouraged by self doubt.
- Get to work. Do what is takes to make it happen. Work your ass off until it happens and then work some more.
Believe me, you only need to do this successfully one time. After you taste the thrill of victory once you will hunger for it again and again….And the agony of defeat will become but a mere stepping stone to your next bite of success.
Don’t be a loser, have a purpose in life and do whatever it takes to make it happen. Build something memorable!
Stay hungry and take your bite.
